Sri Lanka slowly weaved its web around us – over some 15 trips to the island from 2008 to 2011. The daydreaming came into clearer focus when Garrath discovered a small piece of land opposite one of the islands best waves. Things started gaining momentum, we set up a company, purchased the land, and began the design process. We were both living in Dubai at the time but had started to get itchy feet.
What we were looking for were a challenge and an adventure. We decided that moving to a new country, building from scratch and starting a business would meet that objective, and it did and some! Our goal was always to create somewhere we would love to stay, a lush little oasis with all the luxuries but still down to earth and quirky – true to our personality and values.
Sketched out on numerous pieces of scrap paper our designs finally made it to a draughtsperson and after all the building permissions (which took over a year!) we were ready to start building. Garrath had come out to Sri Lanka a year earlier to get things moving, and in April 2012 it was my time to join him! The building had started a month earlier and when I arrived there were decisions upon decisions to make from door knobs to cushion covers, and it did not stop until just before our first guests knocked on the gate on the 24th of December 2013. We had done it!
Fast-forward to three years later, with the Jungalows almost fully booked during the surf season, we realised we were onto something special.
